Stretch Mark and Scar Treatment with Pigment

Scar and stretch mark camouflage deposits flesh-colored pigment into the dermis, blending hypopigmented or pale scars and stretch marks into the surrounding skin to dramatically improve their appearance. Scars and stretch marks become less noticeable with color and depth restored to the tissue.

What Areas are Best for Scar and Stretch Mark Camouflage?

Areas that aren’t regularly exposed to sunlight are best for stretch mark and scar camouflage. This is because the sun will make the color of your skin change, but the pigment will stay the same. This results in an uneven flesh color.

Plan Accordingly

Don’t make the common mistake of having stretch mark or scar camouflage right before a beach vacation. During recovery, you’ll need to avoid both sun exposure and water, so be sure to plan your treatment schedule accordingly.

What Happens During the Treatment?

Vicky will consult with you beforehand to select the right color for your unique skin tone. Once the selection has been made and the area is numb, you will be made comfortable and the treatment will begin. The pigment is deposited directly into the stretch mark or scar using a tattoo needle-like device. Almost immediately, the scar or stretch mark will become red and raised. This is completely normal, and an important part of the process. It means that your body will produce more collagen for the area. Everyone’s pain threshold is different, so we encourage you to let us know if you’re uncomfortable. We will do everything we can to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during your treatment.

The amount of time the procedure takes will depend on the size of your scar(s) or stretch marks. Two coatings per session is typical, and usually patients need 2-3 sessions scheduled 30-45 days apart.

Downtime and Results

The very first treatment will be the most intense, so be prepared for the scars or stretch marks to be raised and red. This is a good sign, as it means the new collagen is being created. The redness should subside in one to two weeks. As your skin heals from the treatment, the ideal color match will be revealed.

Your skin will go through several healing phases before the right color is settled. This should take about 30 to 45 days. Scar and stretch mark camouflage results are often permanent, and touch-ups can be done 2-5 years after the initial sessions.

Your skin type and how dark the pigment is will determine how long the color will last before fading. Factors that will cause your pigment to fade more quickly include sun exposure, tanning beds, frequent swimming or baths, and exfoliating products.

Aftercare

  • Avoid sun exposure on the treatment area for one month following your procedure to avoid hyperpigmentation
  • Avoid swimming and submerged bathing for one month to prevent infection
  • To avoid further scarring, avoid picking or scratching any scabbing or dry skin during healing
  • Avoid pools, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, steamy showers, and hot baths for two to four weeks
  • Avoid exercise or anything that will make the treatment area become sweaty during healing

What happens to the pigment if I tan?

Can I have stretch mark or scar camouflage done if I’m pregnant?

We do not perform this procedure on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, but we would be happy to set up your appointment after you’ve finished nursing.

Does the treatment work if my skin is tanned?

For stretch mark treatment and scar treatment, it’s best to have the pigment match your original skin tone to ensure the most natural-looking results.

What happens to the pigment if I tan?

Your treated scars or stretch marks will stay the same color as pigment we custom created for you. They do not tan along with your skin. So if you tan, your skin will look a little darker than the camouflaged scars or stretch marks.
